What your pet eats every day has a significant impact on its overall health and well-being. Another factor that directly affects your pet is exercise. When a pet consistently gets the right amount of exercise, it’s going to feel better and be much healthier. But when pets don’t get the exercise they need, it can cause them to feel sluggish or even depressed. Inadequate exercise is also a contributing factor to a wide range of health problems.

Here’s what you need to know to help your pets live a long and healthy life:

Helping Your Dog Stay Healthy and Happy Through Exercise

Any pet owner who has been around multiple dogs knows just how different and unique their personalities can be. So it’s probably not a surprise that different breeds have unique requirements in terms of exercise. A good starting point for just about any dog is 30 to 60 minutes a day. But what can differ greatly from one breed to another is the type of exercise and its intensity.

Active breeds that fall into the working, hunting or herding groups, need aerobically challenging exercise for a minimum of thirty minutes. If your dog is a smaller breed or older in age, exercise should be at a much lower intensity. You never want to force a small dog or puppy to run at the pace of a human adult.

It’s also worth noting that if your dog currently has any health conditions, you should ask your vet about the optimal amount and type of exercise . Also, you can help keep your dog excited and engaged with exercise by finding new places to go on walks or coming up with different variations of favorite games.

Exercise Tips for Cats

Cats love to sleep. However, that doesn’t change the fact that they still need exercise. Not only is exercise important for a cat’s physical health, but it’s an essential part of their mental well-being. Given that obesity has become such a widespread problem among indoor cats, plenty of daily exercise is a must. As little as 15 to 30 minutes of exercise can do a lot for a cat. While you may need to experiment to figure out exactly what gets your cat excited, a laser pointer is a great way to start. Many cat owners also find that catnip is a very useful exercise supplement.

By combining consistent exercise with a healthy diet of fresh, nutritious pet food, you can give your pet the absolute best quality of life! For more information about pet nutrition or to try one of our formulas, please contact Pet Wants Northern Westchester at: (914) 471-0188.
